26/52: a portrait project

   " a portrait of my children, every week, for 2014."

Little Fox| down with a headcold you've been so quiet in your play.

Miss Four| you make me smile. Your tea parties have taken on such a seasonal feel. Picnic blanket by the fire, felt bowls filled with seasonal veggies and your dolls close to the tissue box.

Siblings| That moment when your heart melts.

BITS + PIECES: a weekly collection

The diffused, filtered light of winter has been beautiful this week. Slivers of yellow and white have been cascading over the floor and walls. Shafts of light surrounding the children in beautiful  auras. I've been mindful of the simple things. Siblings playing, picnics with toys, teaching Miss 4 to warm the teapot to make tea, spontaneous moments of love. Having to take rest while we have been sick with headcolds and fever has made us more aware of the slumber and slowness that comes with winter.

The garden grows more slowly and is vulnerable to the elements. The bare limbs of the maple and the local gums reveal more of the song and turbulent dance with the wind. The flight of birds encumbered by a sudden gusts of wind often changing their determined course. We have snuggled under quilts on the couch, with the fire on watching winter play out of our front window. Taking in the seasonal changes, planning our Intentional learning embracing nature, drawing our nature walk finds. Taking time to nurture the body with plenty of rest, bone broths, thick soups and warming teas.  With the rain showers + storm clouds painting stormy shadows across the landscape we've talked about what we've seen. Miss 4 has a growing awareness of the fading light outside, and is comforted by the ritual and warmth that comes from lighting candles and turning on our lamps each night.

The children snuggle right in of an evening, as night descends, warmed by the fire, we read books or watch tv together. Little Fox has taken to curling up in my lap and falling asleep with rocking and settling, he's been so tired and congested that he seeks comfort in my arms for much of the time. Miss four is often content close by on the couch. Days are often slow and play eb and flows depending on their energy. I've taken time to read and rest as well.

Not long after the kids fall asleep the coughing begins, a restless rhythm that lasts for much of the night.  Eucalyptus balm opens the airways but it'll take time for them to recover. Broken sleep sometimes leads to grumpy dispositions and low energy the next day, so we've been enjoying slow mornings on the couch where not much is planned. I'm accepting with the need to take rest and I'm mindful to heed my body's desire for healing. May it come soon.

This week's Stills:
1-3. playing with seasonal veggies and picnics this week for Intentional learning.
4. A moment I'll treasure, I looked up and it was the most purest example of support, connection and love between them. They held each other in a hug and I melted.
5. Miss 4 taking a photo of her painted toenails.
6. She's been such a big helper this week caring for her sick brother.
7-8. Drawing the rain and dreaming of snowflakes. Using stacking crayons and our rainbow crayons (you can find them in our Intentional learning resources for purchase).
9.-10 Practising our alphabet
11. Snuggles

How have you coped with winter descending? Are you staying healthy and warm?

25/52: a portrait project

   " a portrait of my children, every week, for 2014."

Little Fox| the wintery light casting shadows as it rains outside. Instead of playing with all your toys you sit intently turning the lamp on and off. I think you could be an electrician one day.

Miss Four| nature explorations in the valley with stick in hand. You could have been at home eating croissants in the French quarter instead it was seeking out toadstools + gum nuts with wild abandon and cloud watching.

BITS + PIECES: a weekly collection

There has been a lot of creating at home and also while we were away down the coast. Our home lessons for Intentional learning have focused on beach activities, long walks, nature scenes and stories of animals and sea adventures. We've rugged up in wooly beanies and gumboots when we are out in the cold. Miss 4 and her cousin made the most incredible sand mandala and fairy home, with swings out of sea grass and driftwood. Such creative energy and beautiful surrounds {her pinnie's are for sale here by the way}. I've been trying to stay with the breath those days where I'm mothering in the trenches and it's a hard slog, I'm still really grateful for my tribe. I walked hand in hand with Tully on the beach mindful of being heavily pregnant with him over summer on that same beach. It felt wonderful watching miss 4 collecting shells, and the two of them with their cousins playing and running on the beach. Or turning back and seeing Ads and Tully reading a book sitting on the sand dunes.

23/52: a portrait project {beach sojourns}

   " a portrait of my children, every week, for 2014."

Little Fox| this time 18 months ago I walked this beach pregnant with him about to birth.
We walked hand in hand together this time. Such a precious moment.

Miss Four| the beauty of sandplay.  I just couldn't chose one this week as each tells a strong narrative of winter, connecting to the water and nature.

Miss Four| forest fairy in warm winter clothes by Poppyfoxathome and typically red. Searching for toadstools, fairies and collecting leaves to paint for Intentional learning.

Little Fox| discovering the play kitchen, busy creating pots of tea and dinner. 18 months old and as cute as a button.

Siblings| My tribe, such different little personalities but such a strong bond.

You can read all about last year's 52/2013 project and see all the 52 portraits of my tribe here. We've spent time in the hills exploring the forest and discovering the season's changes. Autumn leaves are falling and the trees are casting such a beautiful light. I've been busy sewing, getting stock in the shop, weeding the veggie patch and spending time as a family. Sometimes I'm rushing about but it's great when I stop, take a breath and enjoy my tribe, friends and life.
What have you been up to?

BITS + PIECES: Stills- a weekly collection {home happenings}

There has been a lot of creating at home. Our home lessons for Intentional learning have focused on indoor activities, nature scenes and stories of animals and sea adventures with pirates. Leading to a fun photo session with our pirates and my tribe posing in the pirate fox pants {they are for sale here}.
Miss 4 made cookies in the afternoons while bread rose ready for baking. Cottons were organised in colours of the rainbow as l finished Sunday Pinnies for the online shop {you can see them all here}. She took to my phone to take photos of home life, you can see her bowl of cottons, the floor and coffee table and the candle in this week's Stills. It's a busy but wonderfully creative time.
The garden is lush and green and we are starting to harvest young beans, lettuce, herbs and radishes for meals {you can read the Garden series here}.
But most of all l have been trying to practise gratitude for the little moments where my kids are happy and mothering isn't so hard, having one of my best friends fighting cancer reminds me to be mindful in my life, loving fully, being grateful, being present in the here and now and taking the time to slow down when the opportunity arises and enjoy simple pleasures. I went shopping, shared a babychino/coffee with Little fox, read lots of books this week to the tribe, had crafternoons and made sure that there were lots of laughter. It's important that those things happen no matter how busy life gets.
